Scripture Reading:

·         1 Corinthians 12:12-27, ESV

·         Ephesians 4:1-6, ESV

Many Members ~ one body

This is Paul’s go to illustration of what it means to be joined to Christ becoming ONE with Him. Very unique parts. Doing what they do best, not for their own glory, but for the benefit of the whole.

The “So What” of this, as Paul tells us, is that it’s the same for THE BODY OF CHRIST. When we talk about “the body of Christ” in this context, we’re not talking about the actual physical body of Christ, are we?

It’s the spiritual body of Christ, which is His Church, of which He is the head.

What is the origin of this UNITY?

·         Is it a commanded unity? – be unified because I say so!

·         Is it a volunteer unity? – I’ll unify because it’s good for me!

·         Is it an organic unity? – I’ll unify because it is the nature of who and what I am in Christ?

·         Is it an inherited unity? – I’ll unify because it is who and what God is?

7 unities rooted in The Trinity

1. One Body                                   2. One Spirit

3. One Hope                                   4. One Lord

5. One Faith                                    6. One Baptism

7. One God and Father

Note of the members of the Godhead within these 7 Unit’s

1.     Vs 4 = Holy Spirit

2.     Vs 5 = The Son

3.      Vs 6 = The Father

Truth Point:The Origin of UNITY is found in the character and nature of God… 1 in 3 - 3 in 1.

VS4 - One Spirit:The Holy Spirit is the Person of the Trinity that works among men to bring them into The One Body and to open their eyes to The One Hope.  1 Corinthians 12:13

Theologically it is called “baptism of the Spirit.” It has nothing to do with water, but is a supernatural act of The Spirit, whereby He                plunges-submerges us into The Body of Christ.

This takes place for every believer and is synonymous with what we commonly call “conversion”.

Not only does the Holy Spirit graft us into the body of Christ, He opens our “spiritual eyes” to The Hope (confidence) of our eternal perfection and presence with God when Christ gathers His saints to Himself at His return.

VS5 - One Lord: - Although the name Jesus does not appear here, there is no doubt that He is the One who the title refers to, for Scripture is unwavering concerning who this ONE LORD is.

·         1 Corinthians 8:6, ESV

·         Philippians 2:10-11, ESV

What is Jesus’ part in this aspect of Trinitarian Unity? He is the Author of our One Faith.

The word “faith” here is not talking about an act of faith whereby one becomes a child of God, but points to a “body of truth” that has been given whereon we stand as children of God.  Jude 3.

Jesus is also responsible for giving us One Baptism.

Interpreting this part of VS5 requires that we ask about the nature of the “baptism” Paul is referring to. Is he talking about water baptism or Spirit Baptism?

Paul is most likely referring to water baptism in this instance.

He alluded to Spirit Baptism in VS4 which focused on the work of the Holy Spirit and entrance into The Body of Christ.

VS5 is focused on The Lord Jesus Christ, both in the aspect of One Faith, which is centered on Him and the aspect of Water Baptism which is the way Christ called His disciples to identify those who become followers of Him.   Matthew 28:19

There is but ONE Spirit baptism, which brings us into union with Christ, and ONE Water Baptism that announces to the world that we have passed from Spiritual death into Spiritual Life.

VS6 – One God & Father: Notice what it says about His work in UNITY. He is: God and Father of all, …is over all …through all …in all.

4 aspects to consider:

1.     RelationshipGod and Father of all…

2.     Authority– over all…

3.     Power– through all…

4.     Presence– in all…

Relationship:Christianity is NOT a religion, but a relationship. When a spiritually dead sinner is brought to spiritual life in Christ Jesus, the relationship with God changes. No longer is He our condemning Judge. He becomes our loving Father.

Authority: Paul put it to the Corinthian believers in a very straight forward and plain fashion… Here’s what he said…

19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.  1 Corinthians 6:19-20, ESV

We don’t belong to ourselves to determine our own way, but we are ALL accountable to Our Father who is OVER US.

Power: It takes supernatural power to walk the Christ-Life and our Father has given His own Divine power to His children through His Spirit. Acts 1:8

Presence: Through The Spirit, The Father is always present with us, actually living inside of us:…

·         …reminding us that we belong to Him.

·         …comforting us as we go through life’s trials.

·         …reassuring us that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

 Wrap Up

7 Unity’s, expressed through the 3 in 1/1 in 3 Unified Triune God.

·         One Spirit: connecting us to One Body & One Hope.

·         One Lord: connecting us to One Faith & One Baptism.

·         One God & Father: connecting us with the fullness of Himself by relationship, authority, power and presence.

Given the UNITED Nature of who and what God is, and the New Life and Intimate Connection He has brought us into with Himself, how can we not …contend for the UNITY of The Spirit in the bond of peace.

We must fall on our faces before our God, surrendering ourselves to UNITY with HIM, and with each Other. This is the foundation of The Worthy Walk that is fitting of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
