Scripture Reading – Ephesians 1:5-6, ESV
Verses 3 and 5 each contain a word that has proven to be very difficult for many people to understand.
· VS3 = Election – Chosen
· VS5 = Predestined
The idea associated with these words is that God created some people to be blessed with Heaven and some to be cursed with Hell and they have no real say in the matter. The Bible does not teach this, nor do these words do not point us in that direction.
Election: The idea that God created certain people for Hell.
12Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, (Adam) and death (condemnation) through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned. Romans 5:12
God created NO ONE for condemnation, but condemnation has fallen on ALL MANKIND.
Adam’s sin cast humanity into condemnation and our individual sins are evidence that we belong to Adam and that God’s condemnation against sin is justified.
Just as “one man’s sin, brought condemnation to all,” another Man’s righteous act brought MERCY & GRACE to many.
15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s (Adam’s) trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. Romans 5:15
The choosing God has done is NOT one of condemnation, but one of grace.
Predestined: is NOT tied to a people being predetermined for condemnation, but to ADOPTION as sons and daughters of God.
What then does this “Adoption” mean for me? How is it as blessing?
Not the same meaning
Generally speaking, the word ADOPTION has to do with the making of a son/daughter.
Paul’s view of ADOPTION is NOT focused on the MAKING of a son/daughter, but of the PLACING of a son or daughter.
The word is huiothesia – It is the connection of 2 words…
· huios = son
· thesis = a placing
In this context the child in question is already a son-daughter, but the parent is declaring that child to be of full age so that they have full rights of maturity.
significance for god’s children
God predestined that everyone who would be born-again into His family, would immediately have conferred upon them full status within the family.
Whether you were born into the family of God yesterday, or you’ve been His child for 50 years, both have full status in the family, possessing equally the fullness of God’s riches in Christ Jesus.
This means that the fullness of the riches of your Heavenly Father is yours …at your disposal… so that you can be and do all your Father has planned for you.
You have every resource available to be the man or woman God desires you to be.
· You can do any ministry,
· endure any hardship,
· excel at any calling.
God has invested in you, from the moment of your spiritual birth, the fullness of His riches through Jesus Christ.
Take note of the REASON God has done these things for us… VS5b-6: according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
The blessings of “election,” “holiness,” “blamelessness” and “adoption” are NOT given because of any merit found in us, but solely by the internal will and pleasure of God Himself.
You ask… why is that important? It speaks to what motivates God to do what He does.
God chose to make these blessings ours before creation even existed. There was no relationship. In His omniscience, God could see our sin, rebellion, our rejection and hatefulness toward Him.
This is amazing… it was in seeing us in that state that He chose within Himself to…
· set His sights on us,
· to love us,
· to bring us to Himself,
· to make us holy and blameless
· to adopt us to the full position of sons-daughters, just like His natural eternal Son, Jesus.
We are BLESSED
God loves you. He proved that when Jesus gave His life on the cross for sins. He proved that when He raised Jesus to new life and made Him the giver of Eternal Life to all who will believe.
Won’t you put the full weight of your trust in Him today?
