Matthew 1:1-11

Matthew introduces his gospel with Jesus genealogy traced back to Abraham.  Notable verses include –

v. 3 – Judah and Tamar’s  relationship, which was based on mistrust and broken promises

v. 6 – David and Bathsheba’s  relationship, founded on lust, adultery, murder, and scandal in the highest office in the land

v. 11 – The deportation   , one of the lowest points in Israel’s history

Why would God include such “forgettable moments” as those to include in the genealogy of His Son?

TRUTH POINT #1 Christmas reminds us that God’s   truth is greater than our weak points.

Matthew 1:18-25

v. 18 – Mary was   betrothed and was   found  to be

with   child .

Luke 1:39 – Mary arose and went  in a hurry .

Luke 1:56 – Mary stayed with Elizabeth about  three

months.

Matthew 1:19 – Joseph, upon learning of Mary’s seemingly unexplainable pregnancy, planned to break the betrothal privately so as not to humiliate Mary and her family.

Deuteronomy 22:23-27

v. 23-24 If a woman was assaulted in an isolated area, only the man would be stoned as punishment, because it is assumed the woman cried out for help but could not be heard.

v. 25-27 If a woman was assaulted in a populated area (city, town), both the man and woman would be stoned, because it was assumed the woman did not call out for help.

“God’s will is what we would always want if we had

all the   facts .”  Dr. William Thrasher, Moody Bible Institute

TRUTH POINT #2 God’s direction in our lives will never go against

His   Word .

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Ephesians 4:22-24 Lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

Romans 8:15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

TRUTH POINT #3 God has made us to come   alive  in Him – to live in the truth of His new creation – not the past of a mere existence.

Questions to ponder:

1. What are the weaknesses in my life that seem more real to me than the truth of who I am in Christ?

2. Who could I approach to ask to keep me accountable about my sin?

3. What are some potential areas of change in my life that, if I put them in to practice, they would bless me and my family?

4. What excites me most about the idea of “coming alive” in my relationship with Jesus, and leaving behind “a spirit of slavery leading to fear”? (Romans 8:15)

Come Alive, from The Greatest Showman

You stumble through your days, Got your head hung low

Your sky’s a shade of grey, Like a zombie in a maze

You're asleep inside, But you can shake away

'Cause you're just a dead man walking,

Thinking that's your only option

But you can flip the switch and brighten up your darkest day

Sun is up and the color's blinding,

Take the world and redefine it

Leave behind your narrow mind, You'll never be the same

Chorus

Come alive, come alive, Go and light your light

Let it burn so bright, Reaching up

To the sky, And it's open wide

You're electrified

When the world becomes a fantasy

And you're more than you could ever be

'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open

And you know you can't go back again

To the world that you were living in

'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open

So, come alive!

I see it in your eyes, You believe that lie

That you need to hide your face, Afraid to step outside

So you lock the door, But don't you stay that way

No more living in those shadows

You and me we know how that goes

'Cause once you see it, oh you'll never, never be the same

We'll be the light that's turning, Bottle up and keep on shining

You can prove there's more to you, You cannot be afraid

(Chorus)

Come one! Come all! Come in! Come on!

To anyone who's bursting with a dream

Come one! Come all! You hear the call

To anyone who's searching for a way to break free

Break free! Break free!

When the world becomes a fantasy

And you're more than you could ever be

'Cause you're dreaming with your eyes wide open

And we know we can't go back again

To the world that we were living in

'Cause we're dreaming with our eyes wide open

(Hey!) (2x)

'Cause we're dreaming with our eyes wide open

So come alive! (Come alive!) (Yeah!)
